PLP-R/W Programme

(I) Introduction to the programme

Primary Literacy Programme in Reading and Writing [PLP-R/W (KS1)] offered by the NET Section of Education Bureau adopts a holistic approach to language learning, incorporating the four skills and with an emphasis on reading and writing. It places heavy emphasis not only on students' literacy development, but also on teachers' professional development which aims to equip teachers with a wider repertoire of teaching strategies. The implementation of the programme exemplifies the importance of the tripartite partnership between the local English teachers (LETs), the NET and the Advisory Teacher.

In our school, two out of seven English lessons are devoted to the PLP-R/W each week for P1-3. In addition to the designated Big Books provided by the NET Section, Small Books are introduced to increase students' exposure to reading. The Small Books are well matched with the Big Books according to their themes. During the lessons, different reading strategies are introduced to students. Guided reading is also carried out to scaffold students to read and provide them with opportunities to practise various reading skills and decoding strategies with teacher's guidance.

Through the teaching of Big Books and Small Books, we also enhance students' phonics skills and deepen their knowledge of different sounds with the school-based phonics programme. Not only will students acquire language skills, but they will also develop a range of positive values and attitudes and learn about national security through PLP-R/W.

(II) Space Town Go!

Space Town Go! is a web-based resource platform designed to support the implementation of PLP-R/W (KS1). It supports school-based English Language curriculum development and home learning by helping P1 - P3 students develop their literacy skills.

Space Town Go! offers over 200 storybooks and sound books. Students may read and listen to these books and even record themselves reading. There are also interactive games which support the learning and teaching of high frequency and content words, and phonics from every unit. Both analytic and synthetic phonics are included in Space Town Go! and are aligned with the sequence of teaching, thus helping students develop their phonemic awareness skills at both word and sound levels.

Space Town Go! for P1, P2 and P3 will eventually replace Reading Town apps 1, 2 and 3.
